On December 16, 2024, Som Brasil performed at the Fulton Street Collective (FSC) in Chicago, delivering a memorable performance that celebrated the band's rich history and enduring musical legacy.
Breno and Neusa Sauer, the heart of Som Brasil, began their journey in the 1960s when they moved from Brazil to Mexico before settling in Chicago in the 1980s. In 1985, they founded Som Brasil, performing at iconic venues such as Jazz Bulls and the Green Mill, while collaborating with some of Chicago’s finest jazz musicians. Breno’s distinctive playing and arranging style, paired with Neusa’s exceptional vocal artistry, infused the band with a sound that was uniquely their own.
The FSC event honored this heritage while spotlighting a new iteration of the band. The ensemble featured the dynamic vocalist and founding member Neusa Sauer, along with former full-time members Luiz Ewerling and Peter O’Neil (now based in Rio de Janeiro). They were joined by Steve Million on keys, Luciano Antonio on guitar and vocals, Marcel Bonfim on bass, and Luiz Ewerling on drums and cymbals, creating a vibrant and captivating performance.
Adding a creative visual dimension, artist Julian Camacho produced original artwork live, inspired by the music, making the evening a true celebration of art and culture.
