The Hyde Park Jazz Festival has announced the 2023 HPJF lineup. The 17th Annual Festival will once again be held in architecturally unique venues across the Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Washington Park neighborhoods. The Festival lineup features 36+ FREE performances on September 23rd-24th, 2023. The program includes national and international artists alongside some of Chicago’s brightest lights. Venues include: Smart Museum, International House, Rockefeller Chapel, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, Hyde Park Bank, Hyde Park Union Church, The DuSable Museum, Augustana Church, Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, and the Midway Plaisance.
Special guest and visiting musician projects include: Courtney Bryan, Silvia Bolognesi Quartet, Melanie Charles with special guest Marquis Hill, Steve Colson, Chico Freeman, Louis Hayes Quintet, Pedrito Martinez Group, Nicole Mitchell, Endea Owens and the Cookout, Ches Smith and We All Break, Luke Stewart. NEA Jazz Master, Kenny Barron will close out the Saturday Festival program with a very special late-night solo piano performance in Rockefeller Chapel. The Festival concludes on Sunday evening on the Wagner Stage with a celebration of what would have been the late great Von Freeman’s 100th Birthday (10/3/2023) led by his son Chico Freeman (tenor saxophone) and Chicago musicians Mike Allemana (guitar), Julius Tucker (piano), Kyle Swan (drums), and Christian Dillingham (bass).
Artifacts Trio (Nicole Mitchell (flute), Mike Reed (drums), Tomeka Reid (cello)) will collaborate with Ensemble Dal Niente (conducted by Michael Lewanski) to perform the US premiere of Nicole Mitchell’s composition, Decolonizing Beauty. Dal Niente will also present the World Premiere of Mitchell’s composition, South Side Love Letter. Other special projects include a performance by Josh Berman and Ben LaMar Gay, Everywhere Often, in honor of composer and trumpet-player, jaimie Branch and a solo performance by vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz of compositions by Roscoe Mitchell.
